Interview:

FOEM/Christ Saddler: Music, like life, is measured in beats. Heartbeats. Listening is living. Dancing is more than that… dancing is understanding the deepest meaning of your own heartbeat. Accepting that, you, yourself are a rhythm. A rhythm oscillating through the universe. Giving him life. Scientists may call this theory – The Stringed Theory, but for musicians is more than that, so lets just ask more about it.

FOEM/Christ Saddler: Why Stringed Theory?

The Stringed Theory: The Stringed Theory stems from the theoretical physics concept of string theory, a model of our universe in which tiny oscillating strings form the basis of everything - unifying the infinitesimally small with the incomprehensibly grandiose. The Stringed Theory name is a play on that concept as musical resonances take the place of strings in the construction of textured and layered ambient music.

FOEM/Christ Saddler: I’ve seen that you put some links on your website with more information regarding the theory. I never learned that in school and it seems pretty much interesting. But from science to music isn’t quiet a short way, so describe me your musical roots.

The Stringed Theory: I’ve been creating music in one form or another for the better part of the last decade. Over the years, I’ve played guitar, bass and drums in an assortment of bands. In more recent years, I’ve parlayed my continuous computer-based sound tinkering into producing electronic music as the rise of technology has finally enabled the long-overdue, complete studio-in-a-box. I’ve always found hardware synthesizers and samplers too cumbersome to use effectively – software greatly simplifies the tedious parts of creating, editing, mixing and mastering electronic music. In addition to ambient music I’ve also done the electropop thing.

FOEM/Christ Saddler: Both, software and hardware instruments, have their own issues. A mixture between them is the best. Like good and bad thoughts. I’ve met lots of artists that say they get inspiration only from the name of the song and nothing more. When you create music do you draw from real life experiences and events?

The Stringed Theory: I believe that every artist making anything beyond your standard boilerplate pop song draws inspiration from their life in one way or another. In my case it’s not a specific set of feelings, experiences or events, but rather a more general, cumulative experience that I apply to my creations.

FOEM/Christ Saddler: I can feel that in your tracks. Have you worked together with other artists also?

The Stringed Theory: Somewhat, but I have not released anything substantial as a collaboration. In a more general sense, my main collaborative effort has been with an excellent graphic artist from Colombia, xNoleet (http://vm.dojohabit.com/), who has generously given his time to create album art for my releases. I hope to one day collaborate on some sort of multimedia endeavor.

FOEM/Christ Saddler: I’ve listened to some tracks from your website. I love them; do you plan to change others’ feelings or way of thinking through music?

The Stringed Theory: Thanks! I would definitely say that my goal with music is to inspire others – either in thought or emotion. If I can do either for those listening, I’ve succeeded.

FOEM/Christ Saddler: I think that some of your tracks can fit well in a movie or something like that. Have you ever thought to make music for movies?

The Stringed Theory: While my original intent is to make music for my enjoyment and the enjoyment of others, ambient music does seem to have a healthy relationship with modern cinema. I’ve never thought specifically of making music for movies, but like most artists in this genre I would be open to the idea.

FOEM/Christ Saddler: How do you see the future of electronic music? Do you see new genres being forged or adaptations of old ones?

The Stringed Theory: I see electronic music as the cutting edge of much of today’s music, as opposed to your prototypical guitar/bass/drums/vocal “band” paradigm. With the popularity of bands that incorporate electronic music into their acts, such as the Killers and the Rapture; as well as with some of the electropop projects such as the Postal Service, Cut Copy and LCD Soundsystem; electronic music is definitely forging new ground. It will be interesting to see what transpires in the next few years as technology advances and more people develop an interest in electronic music.

FOEM/Christ Saddler: Regarding the future of electronic music, will you teach your kids how to create it?

The Stringed Theory: If they are willing to learn, sure. But with how fast computer technology advances, they might be teaching me a thing or two down the road. ;-)

FOEM/Christ Saddler: Hehe, that’s right, but look at the advantage of mixing older and newer knowledge in this art section :) But tell me, what's one thing you're a fan of that people might not expect?

The Stringed Theory: Silence. As someone that listens to a fair share of music and who also creates it, I enjoy silence. I know some people that can’t go anywhere or do anything without music. That’s not me. Sounds are all around us – most people don’t stop to listen.

FOEM/Christ Saddler: Even silence is a sort of music that may calm people in this noisy world. You managed to make music to have the same effect as silence. Good luck with it! FOEM supports you as much as possible.

The Stringed Theory: Thanks! I and the rest of the electronic music community thank you and all of FOEM for your dedication and time in spreading the word about electronic music.
