Interview

FOEM/Christ Saddler: Hello Sohrab, welcome here at FOEM. For the beginning please have a cup of coffee and also you can try to reveal to us from where does your artist name come from? What does it mean?

Sohrab: I started producing about 2 years ago and it’s about 1 year since I started to make ambient sounds, and before that I never thought of an artist name, actually I never considered myself as an artist! After I got to the level to send my songs to people to get feed back I had choosen the name “dreamer” for my ambient/experimental songs. That’s because in place that I live I have no real joy, so the only times that I can feel real good is when I dream.

FOEM/Christ Saddler: That side of the world is pretty mad these days, though. The only way to escape is dreaming. And you reflect that quite well with music. What are your musical roots!

Sohrab: I was a drummer at first! We had a punk rock/ska band with my brother at bass and a friend as guitar. That was about 3-4 years ago. This kind of music and almost every kind of music is forbidden to play in Iran. So we fall apart after sometime, like many others.

FOEM/Christ Saddler: How did you come to producing?

Sohrab: Hmm, after our band fucked up, I wanted to start something new, but this time on my own. And to be honest first I started because I was thinking it’s really cool to make a release! You know what I mean...but after a year that I nearly learnt how to work with tools, I got to the point to make sounds just for myself, for my feelings I mean. I’ve started to enjoy it.

FOEM/Christ Saddler: It’s good that you didn’t felt into depression because of the band and continued to raise your musical skills. Has there ever been a time in your life when making tracks just did not work? Maybe because you were stressed or so?

Sohrab: Sure, but that was just from the time that I didn’t know why I’m doing this! There was many times I wasn’t even motivated but force myself like: ”hey you have to do it! You have to do it in this way”...and it’s so stupid. Right now there is no right or wrong for me to make sounds.

FOEM/Christ Saddler: Is this the only area of music which you’re working in?

Sohrab: I think so, I like noisy stuff and soundtrack sounds too.

FOEM/Christ Saddler: Do you want to make producing as you job?

Sohrab: You know, in my humble opinion making music is not a job. I do this since I have feelings and dreams.

FOEM/Christ Saddler: How did you come to FOEM?

Sohrab: mmh, let me think...I can’t really remember, but whatever it was, I’m so damn glad that it happened and so sorry that I didn’t find it earlier!

FOEM/Christ Saddler: Then what do you like about FOEM?

Sohrab: You better ask: what you don’t like about FOEM! The idea is just great: “free music for free people” I like the forum and folks there, they’re so open minded for any kind of music and not prejudiced to a special style like many other forums/communities.

FOEM/Christ Saddler: When you sent your last promo to a label, what was their reaction? Which label was it?

Sohrab: It was the netlabel “tidelpool” and a cool guy named Thor Kell, if I’m not wrong. He told me it’s not still so good to put on his label and I have to make more efforts and that he’ll be glad to hear new stuff. I know that I have lot of things to do!

FOEM/Christ Saddler: What do you think of the contemporary popular music which is played by normal radio stations?

Sohrab: Well we don’t have something like music radio stations here!

FOEM/Christ Saddler: Oh, I forgot about that. It’s sad. But then tell me what do you think about the commercial music in general?

Sohrab: I don’t even think about it! What the hell is that?! There are good music on every style, but I really hate those who just pose in front of camera and get paid just for showing they’re asses! Is that music?! Music is what a guy like “Sirconical” do. And how many people heard of him!?

FOEM/Christ Saddler: What's one thing you're a fan of that people might not expect?

Sohrab: Jenna Jameson!

FOEM/Christ Saddler: Hehe! :-D cool idol, what can I say. I like her too, but let’s get back to normal a little bit because our readers might get their hormones mad, so what have you read recently (book, play, film, etc.) that moved or surprised you?

Sohrab: Makarenko books, teacher of Pedagogical learnings. Recently I got inspired by Russians culture and people and think I’ll move there soon! And I’m a big fan of David Lynch and Takeshi Kitano.

FOEM/Christ Saddler: To be honest, a few days ago I’ve seen a Russian movie called Day Watch and it impressed me more than Matrix did. Now, getting back to the interview, being a musician or a DJ can be tough and frustrating and many musicians and DJs 'burn out' after a number of years. How do you plan to sustain your efforts over  the coming years and avoid that 'burn out'?

Sohrab: As I told above right now I’m just doing it because I really feel for it, my computer has became my girlfriend!  And I’m not even boiled still! So I’m still far away from burning I guess!

FOEM/Christ Saddler: If the end of electronic music will stop all the wars and hate in the whole universe, would you stop creating this kind of music?

Sohrab: Ah!!! What a question! There will be more wars without electronic music I guess!

FOEM/Christ Saddler: And in the end tell us a question that you will never want to answer :) (And still, there is any possibility to answer to this question?)

Sohrab: Maybe this one: Tell us a question that you will never want to answer? Hahaha!!!

FOEM/Christ Saddler: Hehe, (LOL)! Have good luck and much fun in your life! FOEM supports you as much as possible.

Sohrab: Thanks a lot and I’d like to thank you all at Foem  Crew, I really appreciate what you do and it’s a pleasure to be a part of Foem.
