Interview This week on FOEM’s Interview Corner we have invited an Artist that will pump up and make you shake on all other 3 corners of the Electronic Youth Room, so let’s hit the pen and increase the volume of our questions: Interview questions: FOEM/Christ Saddler: From one corner to another, from me to Paul Planlos here: big welcome to our electronic family and if you are here let’s hug you with some questions, hehe. First of all tell us where does your artistname come from? What does it mean? Paul Planlos: I got the name “Paul-Planlos”within a computer game, cause i was running through the levels without a plan (->planless). So it became my nickname in the internet and also for early music productions. Now that I found my style in techno and hardtechno it was time to change to a more serious name called “EKT” (electro convulsive therapy) FOEM/Christ Saddler: If you can run in this big game named life also without plans and still handle it well then you have my big WOW and congrats! And now let’s make this interview also without predefined plans for you. Describe us your musical roots! Paul Planlos: My parents were listening to music a lot and always loud! I was born with “Pink Floyd” playing in background hehe! As I remember there was always music playing, e.g.: Black Sabbath, AC/DC, The Alan Parsons Project, Jean Michel Jarre ... ect. I always thougt of making music myself one day. FOEM/Christ Saddler: Hehe, nice education from your parents. They usualy get angry if their kids will play music loud. How did you come to producing? Paul Planlos: In 1999 I bought a Roland MC 505 Groovebox and made my experiences with patterns and sequences. Unfortunately it was more a kid`s toy than an instrument......i selled it! Now I`m producing with my PC and Logic FOEM/Christ Saddler: Well maybe you should try not to get rid of the instruments. In my opinion an artist should try both ways in creating music. But tell me what are your musical aims? Paul Planlos: My musical aim is to create tracks, that are recognized by people, they should sound like me - not like standard! FOEM/Christ Saddler: Do you want to make producing as your job? Paul Planlos: Would be great!! But I`m scared a little bit that the job-character would destroy my pleasure in making music. Like Teflonbuddah said in his Interwiew: “If I win the Lotto.....” - I think so too. FOEM/Christ Saddler: If all of the known artists will think like you guys... But the world is full of people and...people. You are also a DJ? Paul Planlos: Hehe....I tried that - but I found out that I wanted to be a music-creator - not only user! FOEM/Christ Saddler: Heh, but you should think at the possibility to mix your own tracks in a way or other. Perhaps if your music will become known by lots of people you will not always want to let others to play your tracks and you will want to do that too. Is this the only area of music which youre working in? Or do you also play in a band or something? Paul Planlos: I played drums long time ago - but not in a band - I had to give up after moving because of disturbing the neighbors! FOEM/Christ Saddler: In which groups in the internet are you active? Boards? Paul Planlos: USB FOEM www.150Bpm.de FOEM/Christ Saddler: And what do you like about FOEM? Paul Planlos: I liked most, that all music styles are welcome! FOEM will get known more and more and will even better support newcomers to get a name. No doubt! FOEM/Christ Saddler: Yeah, as any other important thing in the music industry we are growing too :P And regarding this what do you think about the uprising of netlabels and the conflict between them and the commercial music industry? Paul Planlos: If there is a conflict - I don`t know why? Newcomers can promote themselves via netlabels and commercial labels can contact the newcomers if they are interested. It seems to me like they could work hand in hand together. FOEM/Christ Saddler: When you sent your last promo to a label, what was their reaction? Which label was it? Paul Planlos: I didn`t send anything, but last year I got an email from EX-FUSION-RECORDS , that they were interested to bring my tracks on vinyl. They did a lot of support, so that my first release is avaliable next week on “Hart und Trocken Vol.3” FOEM/Christ Saddler: Well that’s a great thing. Congratulations for the release! Now let’s mash up the questions a little bit and let’s start with some tricky ones. What do you think about the contemporary popular music which is played by normal radio stations? Paul Planlos: Most of that “usual” songs are boring to me. Warmed up disco hits from the 70´s and 80´s ....not my taste! I only listen to radio in my bathroom. Other time winamp is playing! FOEM/Christ Saddler: Have you read anything recently (book, play, film, etc.) that moved or surprised you? Paul Planlos: I spend most of my free time for music related stuff, and by the way I`m too lazy to read something. FOEM/Christ Saddler: Hehe maybe you can try to play a book in winamp. You can find some of them in audio format also. But tell us what's one thing you're a fan of that people might not expect? Paul Planlos: I like to walk in women`s dress................................No! It`s a joke! FOEM/Christ Saddler: Thanks god! Even if we don’t have anything with that. You can walk in any clothes you want. Here the only thing that matters is makeing good music... and answer to my last question: Being a musician or a DJ can be tough and frustrating and many musicians and DJs 'burn out' after a number of years. How do you plan to sustain your efforts over the coming years and avoid that 'burn out'? Paul Planlos: I do plan nothing! Don`t you know?...I`m planless ;-). I`ll do this as long as i have fun with it. FOEM/Christ Saddler: Have good luck and much fun in your life! FOEM supports you as much as possible. Paul Planlos: Thanks! |
